How FIDE Rating Calculation Works
The Elo rating system, designed by physicist Arpad Elo, is used to measure the relative skill levels of chess players. FIDE currently uses a variation of this system for its official global rankings.
Key Concepts:
- K-Factor: This determines the maximum possible rating change from a single game. Typical values are 40 for new players, 20 for most active players, and 10 for elite professionals.
- Expected Score: Based on the rating difference between two players, this formula predicts the probability of winning or drawing.
- Rating Change: Calculated as: K × (Actual Score - Expected Score).
